Vifor Pharma

Successful research and development

Vifor Pharma produces medicines for the entire world. Its medicines treat iron deficiency anaemia, one of the world's most common deficiencies that affects several hundred million people. The tradition of producing medicines in St.Gallen goes back to 1952 when the former Laboratorien Hausmann AG opened its first plant in Sittertobel. Galenica acquired the company in 1983 for the first time, while from 1991 to 1999 it belonged to B. Braun Medical AG before it once again joined the Galenica Group. The oldest and most-widely used iron medicine, Venofer®, has been produced by Vifor since the 1950s. At its St.Gallen base, under the management of Dr. Hans-Martin Müller, Vifor Pharma now employs 220 people.

Vifor (International) AG is world market leader in the treatment of anaemia. All iron medicines produced and marketed by Vifor Pharma to date were discovered and developed at its St.Gallen location.

From 1999 to 2009, Vifor (International) AG invested around CHF 100 million in renewing and expanding capacities, principally in research and production in St.Gallen. Departments such as Marketing and Sales were moved to the new headquarters in Zurich in 2008.

The broadly-based chemical and food industry of eastern Switzerland is an essential location factor for Vifor. Location manager Dr. Hans-Martin Müller greatly appreciates the high level of motivation among workers from eastern Switzerland as well as the support of the local authorities during Vifor’s expansion of its location.
