You must deregister at the city hall or district office of your former commune, before registering in St.Gallen. Please consult our local Migration Office fact sheets if you are a foreign national, relocating to St.Gallen from abroad.
Please provide the following documents when registering:
- Rental agreement or confirmation from your accommodation provider
- Certificate of origin (for all Swiss citizens over the age of 18)
- Foreign national identity card and travel documents from your country of origin (for foreign nationals)
- Family record booklet or family pass for married persons with minor children
- Valid health insurance card or current basic insurance policy
All foreign nationals must pay registration fees at the Residents’ Office, either in cash or by card.

Register your move in a few steps, thanks to eUmzugCH. Have the following documents ready:
- Social security number, on your OASI-InvI insurance card, and your HIA health insurance card
- Rental agreement or apartment registration for your new residence
- Health insurance cards for all persons moving to the new residence, thus confirming your standard insurance (only if you are moving to or away from St.Gallen)
- Credit card (MasterCard, VISA, PostFinance Card) for paying any fees incurred
Full-time students of the University of St.Gallen (HSG), the St.Gallen University of Teacher Education (PHSG), the University of Applied Sciences or any other continuing-education institution can register a secondary residence online (as “weekly resident”).
Please note the following:
- This service is exclusively available to students with a primary residence in Switzerland.
- Registry has to be done within 14 days after moving to St.Gallen (art. 6 of the Cantonal Residence and Permanent Settlement Act RPSA; sSB 453.1).
- You will need a rental/sublease agreement or residence confirmation from your accommodation provider, an enrolment certificate from your university and a certificate of residence you can obtain from the municipality of your primary residence.
- Upload the rental agreement and/or residence confirmation and enrolment certificate upon registering. Lastly, send the original of your certificate of residence to the Resident’s Office of St.Gallen: Bevölkerungsdienste der Stadt St.Gallen, Rathaus, 9001 St.Gallen.
- If you choose St.Gallen as your secondary residence, you can do so free of charge.
- Remember: The registration is only valid once the Resident’s Office has sent you the confirmation (your certificate of residence) via e-mail.
Part-time students must register in person at the Residents’ Office and present an employment contract, if working while studying.

Application for a secondary residence for Swiss students (online form) neues FensterIf you are moving abroad, you can only deregister in person at the counter of the Resident’s Office. All persons of full legal age must be present. We need a notice of departure from the tax office, as well as the original foreign national identity card of any foreign national.
Please fill out the questionnaire “Moving abroad” and the form “Power of Authority” to designate a representative. This will keep our administrative burden to a minimum. Please head to the tax office of the city of St.Gallen (City Hall, 2nd floor) one month prior to moving away, with all the required documents, in order to complete the deregistration process.
